Place Name
Named after the local area from the Middle English words suth and bury meaning the south or southern manor, that is thought to be a reference to Harrow itself. In the late 13thCentury it was spelt Suthbery (1292) and Sudbery (1294). It took on the present spelling in 1382 but by 1398 was being spelt Southbery. The word bury is from Middle English and means manor house. There was a corresponding Northburie, but this disappeared in the 16thCentury. Sudburyhill House is featured on the 1877 Ordnance Survey map. This road was laid out over fields which were part of Vale Farm.
