Abingdon Close, SW19

Place Name

Peter of Abingdon, presumably a native of Abingdon in Oxfordshire, was the first Warden of Merton College, Oxford, from 1264 until 1286. Merton, which lays claim to being one of the founding, if not the first Oxford University college, can trace its earliest roots back to Merton Priory. Merton was the first fully self-governing College in the University, founded by Walter de Merton, sometime Chancellor of England and later Bishop of Rochester. The college subsequently had large landholdings in the borough. A Henry of Abingdon, was elected Warden of Merton College in 1421. He was previously elected a fellow of Merton College in 1390 and was ordained a deacon February 22, 1398 by Robert de Braybroke, Bishop of London. This area underwent a big redevelopment with South Road being closed off.
