Place Name
A relatively new development built by the Waltham Forest Housing Action Trust between 1995 and 2001 on the site of Oliver Close Council estate. The roads on the estate were named after trees, there is also Robinia Crescent, Larch Road and Walnut Road – and Osier Way and Palm Close adjacent. The name Magnolia first appears in 1703 in Charles Plumier’s Genera to describe a flowering tree from the island of Martinique. The English botanist William Sherard, who studied botany in Paris under Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, a pupil of Magnol, was most likely the first after Plumier to adopt the genus name Magnolia.
