Place Name
Recalling the Abbots of Bury St Edmunds, in Suffolk who were given a property here sometime before 1160, by David the Dane, a London benefactor. It is one of several places in the vicinity that notes the connection, including Bevis Marks. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, Henry VIII’s land grab against the Roman Catholic Church, the abbey was dissolved and the Heneage family acquired the property.
