Place Name
The Black Swan Tavern stood at 71 Bermondsey Street from at least 1822 and quite possibly much earlier. It was previously Swan Yard as featured on Richard Horwood’s PLAN of the Cities of LONDON and WESTMINSTER the Borough of SOUTHWARK, and PARTS adjoining Shewing every HOUSE, so the pub certainly changed name. No doubt the addition of Black to show the change of ownership while retaining the original name. The tavern was demolished.
