Kingfisher Drive, TW10

Place Name

One of a number of streets on the Wates estate, built between 1963 and 1967, that are named after a connection with the nearby River Thames. The common kingfisher does live along the Thames but not around here as it is the wrong habitat. Evelyn Pritchard in Guide to the street names of Ham and Petersham speculates “they may have been seen at the Thames Young Mariners’ base”. The road was first named in 1965.
