Place Name
Like many of the roads laid out over the property of the Selwyn family, Royston has a personal connection. In this case the Reverend William Selwyn, canon of Ely Cathedral, a Professor of Divinity at Lady Margaret College, Cambridge, and an amateur astronomer, was vicar of the parish of Melbourn, in Cambridgeshire, between 1846 and 1853, which included the town of Royston. He later leased property in nearby Royston, in Hertfordshire, in 1872. The name was first used for four houses in Mount Ararat Road as Royston Gardens. The name was first used for the street in 1885.
