Place Name
Laid out on part of the Leybourne Popham Estate. First mentioned in the electoral rolls of 1937, the name means lands kept in demesne, that is, for the use of the lord and his family. However, why it was chosen for this particular street is unknown. The former Stawell House at the corner of Queen’s Road and Sheen Road was knocked down to make way for the flats. The Courtlands Estate history explains: “The Hon. Heneage Legge, a younger son of the third Earl of Dartmouth, purchased the property in 1829 and after a few years demolished the old house and built a new one on elevated ground at the south of the site. He called it Stawell House (pronounced as in ‘shawl’) and the Tithe Appointment map of 1839 shows the new layout.”
