Church Court, TW9

Place Name

It was recorded as Church Lane in the court rolls of 1637 – the name being literal as it led directly to St Mary Magdalene Church, Richmond, the original church was built at the end of the 12thCentury and for 300 years was the only centre of worship in the town. This road was first paved in 1651, it was paid for by a special rate to pave the roads leading from the Green to the church, namely this and Brewer’s Lane. From the dawn of the 19thCentury the name changed to Church Court and in order to reinforce the point the Trustees, who had temporarily taken over the duties of the Vestry, directed that the name be painted on the walls.
