Place Name
Originally called Hampton Road and only going as far as Model Cottages. Takes its name from St Leonard’s the ancient parish church of Shoreditch, where the builder a Mr Cockburn, from Richmond, had been born. He built the first houses, which were aimed at middle class commuters using the new railway and called St Leonards sometime around 1850 on land that had previously been market gardens belonging to the Hampton estate.
