Place Name
Jan Michiel Rijsbrack (June 24, 1694 – January 8, 1770) also variously known as Johannes Michel or John Michael Rysbrack but often referred to simply as Michael Rysbrack, was a leading 18thCentury Flemish sculptor, who spent most of his career in England. Born in Antwerp he moved to London around 1720 and quickly established himself as a master sculptor portraying many of the leading figures of the day. He has 16 monuments in Westminster Abbey alone. His other works include King William III, now Queen Square, Bristol (and usually ranked as the best equestrian statue made in England in the 18thCentury); Sir Isaac Newton, now at Victoria and Albert Museum; Inigo Jones, now at Chiswick House. But he is remembered here for his statue of Sir Hans Sloane, who owned much of Chelsea, which was completed in 1737.
