Kilmington Road, SW13

Place Name

Richard de Kilmington also spelt de Kilvington (died 1361) was a dean of St Paul’s Cathedral. He was appointed by the Pope in 1354 under an agreement with Edward III (an earlier church appointment to the prebend of Brondesbury saw both the bishop and the Pope choosing different men for the post. When the two candidates met they started fighting, earning the church a reprimand). Kilmington left Oxford sometime after 1338 and started his diplomatic and ecclesiastical career as a member of Richard de Bury’s court… before becoming dean which he held until his death. Like many of the streets laid out around Barnes in 1927, it is named after a former dean of St Paul’s Cathedral, who had held the title of lord of the manor since Saxon times.
