Kentwode Green, SW13

Place Name

Reginald Kentwode (died October 8, 1441) was a dean and chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral, a position he held from January 20, 1421 until his death. He had previously been an archdeacon of London and a prebend of Totenhale. This rapid promotion through the church ranks has been ascribed to his wealthy family’s connections. He famously had to draw up a new constitution for the nuns of Holy Cross and St Helen priory, in Bishopsgate, having judged them to be too loose with their behaviour. Like many roads laid out around 1927 in Barnes, this is named after after former deans of St Paul’s Cathedral who had been lords of the manor of Barnes since Saxon times.
