Joseph Powell (1780 – 1834) was one of the foremost watercolourists of his time who in 1831 was a founder member and first president of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, the original having folded 19 years earlier. It was later to become the Royal Institute. Powell was a pupil of another draughtsman and engraver called Benjamin Thomas Pouncy, the pair lived together at Pouncy’s home in Pratt Street, Lambeth, until the tutor’s death in 1799. Among the many works featuring scenes near to where he lived are Chelsea from Battersea marshes with a figure fishing; Near the Thames from Battersea Fields; and View from the Mount Pond on Clapham Common.
