Place Name
Takes its name from Grove Cottage, originally called The Folly, which was built in the Moat Garden in 1740, which was part of the Milbourne House estate. The moat was quiet literally that, Mary Grimewade and Charles Hailstone in the Highways and Byways of Barnes explained: “Homestead moats might be made to prevent the wandering of cattle, to deter intruders, or as a symbol of prestige…” In 1906, James Nichols, the builder of the Lion Houses was given planning permission to develop the Grove House Estate.
