Place Name

This was originally in the hands of the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral who were lords of the manor in Barnes since Saxon times when it was given to them by King Athelstan, the grandson of Alfred the Great.  Up until 1388 St Mary’s Church was a simple vicarage but when it became a rectory it was endowed with greater tithes.
