First Avenue, SW14

Place Name

Originally The Avenue. Although this road was first laid out in 1896, it didn’t get its contemporary name until nine years later. Up until then it was called The Avenue, on account that the route was lined with lime trees, which were cut down to build the houses. The name changed to First Avenue when more roads were laid out including Second Avenue. Maisie Brown author of Barnes and Mortlake Past writes that the new Avenue along with Avondale Road, Ashleigh Road, and Cowley Road “were laid out with a mixture of houses and flats built between 1903 – 1906, much favoured by employees at the newly built bus garage in Avondale Road.”
