Cross Street, SW13

Place Name

William Henry Cross lived in Barnes Terrace from sometime around 1830 until about the middle of the 19thCentury and owned the land when the road was built. This may well be the same Mr Cross who in February 1846 was still refusing to sell his land or at least his lease to Richmond Railway, delaying works on the new train track. He was one of a number of refuseniks who had objected to the line and sold their land rights at hugely inflated prices. This road was laid out over land originally called the Shoulder of Mutton Piece after its shape and more specifically Little Ground in the 17thCentury.
