Place Name
From the Chin Brook a former name for the River Quaggy along this stretch from at least the 12thCentury up until the turn of the 20thCentury. This road crosses the river linking the former Bromley Road (today’s Baring Road) with the former Claypit Lane (today’s Marvels Lane). Like Chingford the name probably derives from the Old English word cingel meaning shingle or stoney. Chinbrook Meadows was a dairy farm until the early 1900s when it was bought by Lewisham Council and opened as a park, for the residents of the new Grove Park housing estate.
