John Skelton (sometime around 1463 – June 21, 1529), thought to be from Diss, in Norfolk, he was a poet and tutor to King Henry VIII. He had a glittering academic career studying at both Oxford and Cambridge and found favour with the Countess of Richmond, Henry VII’s mother. In the last decade of the 15thCentury he was appointed tutor to the young Prince Henry. After a short-term of imprisonment he retired from regular court attendance to become rector of Diss, a benefice he retained nominally until his death. Much of his poetry has been lost and largely forgotten except by scholars. This is one of a small cluster of roads named after English poets.
