Place Name
Galata was a neighbourhood opposite Constantinople, today’s Istanbul, in Turkey. This road was named to commemorate the career Sir Gerard Lowther, a Barnes landowner, who served as an ambassador to Constantinople. He is known for translating and distributing anti-Semitic texts during his time in the region, playing a crucial role in the spread of Arab Anti-Semitism. TE Lawrence (of Arabia fame) called him a “dud”. The road itself was built in 1938 more than 20 years after Lowther’s death. The area was originally part of the estate of Lord Lonsdale who died in 1872 passing it on to his nephew William Lowther MP and from him it was passed to his second son, Gerard.
