Place Name
Built in 1906 it was named in honour of John Ellerton (December 16, 1826 – June 15, 1893), who was Rector of Barnes between 1876 and 1884. He was best known for his prolific writing of hymns, writing or translating some 86, including The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended; Saviour, again to thy dear name we raise; This is the day of light; and Behold us, Lord, a little space. He was forced to quit the parish after the work became too much for him and he had to go abroad for a year, serving as Chaplain at Pegli in Italy from 1884 – 1885. He returned the following year to take up a smaller parish in White Roding, his last.
