Trentbridge Close, IG6

Place Name

Cricket was first played at Trent Bridge in Nottinghamshire sometime in the 1830s with the first recorded match held on an area of ground behind the Trent Bridge Inn in 1838. Today, it is home to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club which was founded in 1841, the same year the ground was opened by William Clarke, husband of the proprietress of the Trent Bridge Inn and himself Captain of the All England Cricket Team. In 1899 Trent Bridge hosted its first Test match, with England playing against Australia. The land on which this street was laid out was originally part of Hope Farm,  but by the 1930s much of Hainault was being developed for residential use. Although this area was originally set aside as a sports ground it went under the diggers and was used for further homes sometime in the 1980s. It is one of a cluster of roads that are named with a cricketing connection recalling the land’s former use.
