Telegraph Avenue, NW7

Place Name

Part of Fairview New Homes Edition Development, which has been built on the former British Newspaper Library site in Colindale which closed in 2012. The estate features several streets and buildings named after newspapers with Observer Close, Chronicle Avenue and Guardian Avenue and apartment blocks Gazette Court, Courier Court , Times Court, and Herald Court (no modern tabloids are featured). The Daily Telegraph was founded as a broadsheet newspaper by Arthur B Sleigh in 1855 as Daily Telegraph & Courier. Although a paper of record it always had a slightly racier reputation than The Times. The paper has been through several owners high profile – if controversial owners. Politically the paper is to the right supporting Conservative causes including Brexit. In 2009 over several weeks the paper broke the MPs’ expenses scandal. The very name Telegraph is a reference to electrical telegraphy that had begun to be introduced in the 1840s, and rapidly spread over the ensuing decades, allowing for faster transmission of the news.
