Honeywood Walk, SM5

Place Name

A reference to Honeywood Lodge (today housing Honeywood Museum) originally called Wandle Cottage. Until the late 19thCentury it was one of two cottages that stood at the western end of Carlshalton Ponds, but in 1883 the freehold to both (Honeywood and Wandle) was purchased by John Pattison Kirk. Kirk quickly set about knocking down Honeywood cottage and transferred the name to the other property. The Beddington, Carlshalton and Wallington Archeological Society writes: “The date of the original Honeywood was almost certainly reflected in the probable seventeenth-century half-chequered chalk block and flint walls in the present Honeywood.” It has been suggested that house may have served as a cold water spa – popular at the time of construction – but the venture likely failed.
