Place Name
Originally one of a small cluster of roads that were named after famous poets, which included Burns Road, Shelley Road and Wordsworth Road. The latter trio, now remembered by Poets Way, were demolished to make way for the Harrow Civic Centre, headquarters for Harrow Council, which, as the earlier Harrow Urban District Council, was based from 1934 in Peel Road, Wealdstone. However, after becoming a municipal borough in 1954 and a London borough in 1965 its responsibilities increased and it sought larger premises moving to a private residence known as Harrow Weald Lodge. This too soon became inadequate for their needs, and civic leaders decided to procure a purpose-built civic centre: the site selected in Station Road. Construction on the new building, which was undertaken by FG Minter, started on July 2, 1970. The new building was designed by Eric G Broughton and was officially opened by the mayor, Alderman Henry Gange, on May 6, 1973.
