Old Forge Road, EN1

Place Name

Takes its name from the blacksmith that was based here. The present name dates from 1930. The smithy appears to have moved sometime between 1897 when it was based near the junction of Canonbury Road and 1913 when it features on maps on Old Forge Road, although the road is not named. Before the industrial revolution, a village smithy was a staple of every town. Factories and mass-production reduced the demand for blacksmith-made tools and hardware.
