Place Name
Originally Potters Lane. The First Boer War ended in 1881, this name was introduced within two years, to commemorate the fighting, which ended in a British loss. It is named after the South African region that came into British hands on May 4, 1843 after the British government annexed the Boer Republic of Natalia. It was the centre of the colonists’ sugar cane industry in the 1860s, which was farmed by labourers brought over from India, after the native Zulu population refused to work on the farms. Patriotic developers at the time would often name streets after military events from around the British Empire.
