Morden Road, SM4

Place Name

Directional, the road to Morden. The name itself means the hill by marshes, albeit a slight rise between the valleys of Beverley Brook and the River Wandle. It was recorded in Anglo-Saxon times as Mordune in AD969, and in the aftermath of the Norman Conquest in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Mordone and later, in 1204 as Moreden. Today this is part of the A24 between London and Worthing, West Sussex, it closely follows the route of the old Roman road Stane Street.
