Place Name

Now part of the North Circular, this used to be the main road leading to the old Bowes Manor. The area was called Bowes from1396 and marked as Bowes Farm and Bowes (Manor) on the Ordnance Survey maps of 1822 and 1877. It was named after the Bowes family who were former lords of the manor. A man named John de Arcubus (Latin for ‘of the bows or arches’) features in a local document from 1274. He was one of many de Arcubis who lived around St Mary-le-Bow (Sancta Maria de arcubus) church in the City of London. In the 1880s the local area was developed taking the name Bowes Park.
