Place Name
As the name implies, this was a topographical description of the soil as prior to the 19thCentury when it was laid across the drained Lambethe Marshe. Anthony Keeling writing in the Times Literary Supplement in 1912 explained: “It is difficult for modern Londoners to realize how large a proportion of central London must formerly have been a brackish marsh more or less widely submerged at irregular intervals by the tide…A few such names as the Lower Marsh in Lambeth over which the new entrance to Waterloo Station now rises help to bring back the picture of the day when all these flats were threaded by mazy channels filled at every tide and continually flooding their shore.”
