PLACE NAME
The village of Hunston, in West Sussex. Originally spelt Hunestan, it is literally translated from Old English as Hūna’s stone, which may refer to an old boundary stone, though local enquiries have failed to reveal any such stone or rock that may have given rise to the name. At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, it is Hunestan and Hunystan in 1296. The name has been chosen here on account of the village’s connection with the Abbey of Lessay in Normandy, the village church having been granted to the abbey by Robert de Haye in 1105. Many of the nearby roads, part of the St Helier’s estate, are named after British monasteries and abbeys in remembrance of the area’s historic ownership by Westminster Abbey. The road names are in alphabetical order, of which Aberconway Road in the north west of the estate is first.
