Place Name
Named after the town Garlinge in Kent, approximately three miles from Quex Park. This road was originally part of Shoot Up Hill Farm which purchased by John Powell, a secretary to George III and onetime Paymaster General, as an investment in 1773, when he died without any children his property was passed to his nephews Arthur Annesley Roberts and John Powell Roberts, who in accordance with the bequest adopted their uncle’s surname and arms. Both Shoot Up Hill and his other estate Kilburn Wood Farm were passed down through the family. Once the railways lines were established in Kilburn, the land began to be sold for housing. All the roads were named after places local to the family’s property at Quex Park, and later after places Major Powell-Cotton visited on his travels – particularly Abyssinia (Ethiopia) between 1899 – 1900. According to the Garlinge Residents’ Association: “Garlinge is possibly the earliest Saxon name on the Isle of Thanet after the wave of colonisation in the 6th century. The village name in its original form of Old English was Geon-ling (gren-hlinc), meaning green lynch, (green hill or green bank) first mentioned in a charter for land in 824. Its name transformed over the years to Grenling (c.1254), Grelinge or Gerlinge (c.1275), Grellnch (c.1327), Garlyng (c.1474) and Garlings (c1800).”
