Place Name

Founded near Burnham, in Buckinghamshire, in the mid-13thCentury by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, the brother of King Henry III, Burnham Abbey was a house of Augustinian canonesses. Although endowed with with several manors and local rights but it was never wealthy. It was closed down during the dissolution in 1539. Since 1916 the surviving buildings have been the home of an Anglican contemplative community, the Society of the Precious Blood who retain the name Burnham Abbey. Like many of the roads on the St Helier’s estate this is named after British monasteries and abbeys in remembrance of the area’s historic ownership by Westminster Abbey. The road names are in alphabetical order, of which Aberconway Road in the north west of the estate is first.
