Place Name
Burmester was a family name of the local landowners. The property was inherited by Susan Burmester Pulleine (March 13, 1803 – August 13, 1888) and her husband Robert Pulleine following the death of her father Hieronymus Burmester. However the street was not laid out or named until the early years of the 20thCentury by which time it was in the ownership of John James Pulleine, the third of the couple’s three children. So the street may have been in memory of his elder brother Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Burmester Pulleine who was killed in the Zulu Wars at the Battle of Isandhlwana. Lieutenant-Colonel Burmester Pulleine was in command of the camp at Isandhlwana when it was attacked and wiped out by the army of 20,000 Zulus on January 22, 1879. He was played by Denholm Elliot in the film Zulu Dawn.
