When Henry Fox, 4th Baron Holland, died in 1874 without any direct heirs of his own (a son and a daughter were stillborn and another son died soon after his birth) he left his considerable estate around Holland Park to his cousin Henry Stephen Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester and Baron of Woodsford Strangways who held a country estate at Abbotsbury Castle in Dorset.
