In memory of the world’s oldest psychiatric unit, the Hospital of St Mary of Bethlehem, which later became the Bethlem Royal Hospital, but better known as the notorious Bedlam. It was moved to Lambeth in 1815 from London Wall, where it had been since 1676. In 1926 the building was purchased by Lord Rothermere to house the Imperial War Museum and the hospital was moved to Bromley.
