Place Name
Stanbrook Abbey’s origins go back to 1625 in Cambrai, Flanders, where it was built as a contemplative house for Benedictine nuns. The community was based in the then Spanish Netherlands, under the auspices of the English Benedictine Congregation. After being deprived of their abbey during the French Revolution, the surviving nuns fled to England and in 1838 settled in Stanbrook, Worcestershire, where a new abbey was built. This road like many others in the vicinity was named after an English religious house in a reference to the nearby ruin of Lesnes Abbey.
