James Smithies (1819 – 1869), was a co-operative movement activist, and one of the original Members of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society Limited. This street, like others on the Bostall Estate, is named after key figures and achievements of the Co-operative movement that wanted to provide good, unadulterated food at fair prices. The Bostall Estate was laid out from 1900 by the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society Ltd.
