Place Name
Named after Panfield Priory in Essex, home to the Augustinian Canons Regular of St Etienne Abbey, Caen, in France. It was founded in the late 11thCentury by Waleran Fitz Ranulph and dissolved in 1413 as part of Henry IV’s suppression of alien (French) priories after his claim to the French throne led to war. The property was granted to Sir Giles Caple by 1539. Traces of the foundations have been located in a field north of Great Priory Farm. The road like many of the nearby streets is named after a former religious house in reference to the nearby ruin of Lesnes Abbey which gave Abbey Wood its name.
