Richard Burbage (sometime around 1567 – March 13, 1619) was an Elizabethan actor, and near contemporary of Edward Alleyn, who was widely considered to have been one of the most famous actors of the Globe Theatre and of his time. Behind the scenes he was also a theatre owner, entrepreneur, and painter as well as a business associate and friend to William Shakespeare. He built the Globe Theatre where Edward Alleyn appeared. The theatre called The Theatre had originally been in Blackfriars but after failing to come to an agreement with the landowner, Richard and his brother Cuthbert dismantled the building and rebuilt it on the south side of the River Thames, calling their new playhouse the Globe in 1599. The Burbage brothers kept half the shares in the new theatre and gave the remainder to Shakespeare and other members of the Chamberlain’s Men. This road was named after Burbage in 1883.
