Place Name
This was so-named in 1894, being almost the boundary between the WC1 and WC2 postal districts. Its renaming followed the 1856 innovation of postcodes when for the first time London was divided into postal divisions. Gillian Bebbington in London Street Names, says that at the time the Postmaster-General announced “it must be obvious that the general use of the correct initials would very much contribute to a rapid and accurate delivery of letters.” In 1746 this was Brewer Street and on a map of that same year, there was a brewing house here.
