Military history. Phineas Pett (November 1, 1570 – August 1647) was a famous Woolwich shipwright during the reign of Charles I. He also built one of the first dry docks in England and also the celebrated ship called the Royal Sovereign, at Woolwich in 1637. Pett Street SE18 is also named after him as is Petts Wood, which he once owned. This was part of the Progress Estate which was built to house the munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, during the First World War.
