Military history. Sir Alexander Dickson (June 3, 1777 – April 22, 1840) served in the artillery during the Napoleonic Wars and was highly regarded by the Duke of Wellington. He later served as Superintendent of the Royal Gun Factories at the Arsenal. In 1847 a memorial was erected at Woolwich. He was one of the earliest fellows of the Royal Geographical Society. Part of the Progress Estate which was built to house the munitions workers at the Royal Arsenal, Woolwich during the First World War. Most of the street names have a connection with military history and the Arsenal.
