William Hamling (August 10, 1912 – March 20, 1975) better known as Bill, was the Labour MP for Woolwich West from 1964 until his death, aged 62, in 1975. In 1968 he was interviewed about his introduction of Private Members’ Bill to change legislation regarding the Sabbath Day. The BFI described him as a “quiet spoken MP with a reputation for speaking loudly in the House”. Originally from Liverpool after the Second World War he took up teaching. In 1947 he joined the Labour Party and contested several seats before winning Woolwich West at the 1964 general election. He was also a trustee of the National Maritime Museum, a governor of the Foudroyant Trust for maritime training and a Justice of the Peace for the Blackheath Division.
