Place Name
Thought to be a corruption of Sir John Wollaston’s (died April 26, 1658) name. Wollaston was an alderman, Lord Mayor of London in 1643 and for a brief time, from 1649 up until his death, lord of the manor of Hornsey. He was a member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and deputy-governor of the Irish Society. During the Interregnum, Sir John bought the manor from the church but after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, it transferred back to the bishops of London who held it until 1868. It then passed to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners who bought out the lessees’ rights. It is on the Harringay Ladder.
