Thomas Warlters (1779 – 1868) was a wealthy man who was named in the 1830 rate book as a ratepayer. Along with Samuel Lovejoy, the pair formed Warlters, Lovejoy & Co, a prototype estate agent and auctioneer. When he died he left properties in Hornsey Rise, Kensington, Westminster, the City and Cranford. Sometime around 1860 he gave land for St Mary’s Church, Ashley Road, Hornsey Rise, to be built. He died in Addington, Croydon, aged 89. Ville was a popular term to describe new developments from the late 18thCentury.
