Place name
Derived from the Latin, ad montem meaning to the hill. Remarkably, up until 1844 there was a Montem Festival held by the boys of Eton College who would dress up in fancy dress and head to Salt Hill, a mound near Slough, demanding money from by-standers. The funds collected covered the expenses of the Senior Colleger known as the Captain of the Montem, at Kings College, Cambridge. There is also a Montem Street in Islington and a Montem Road in Forest Hill. It was first occupied in 1883.
