Thomas Wontner (September 12, 1747 – November 10, 1831) was a hatter originally from Leominster in Herefordshire. He was registered as a Freeman and Liveryman of the City of London in 1771. In 1772 he founded the firm of Thomas Wontner & Sons which by the early 19thCentury was in Greenman’s Lane, employing 40-50 people. He was associated with the founding of the British & Foreign Bible Society and the London Missionary Society, and active with William Wilberforce in the abolition of slavery. He was registered as a Master of the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers in 1793 and was a Churchwarden in 1795 at St. Botolph’s Church, Aldgate.
