Place Name
This is one of two main streets that have ran through Islington from at least the 12thCentury. The other, unsurprisingly, is Lower Street. Upper Street was part of the Great North Road, which ran from Aldersgate and continues through Islington and Holloway to the north from which long-distance and local stagecoach routes ran. It was also used for driving sheep and cattle to London’s meat markets.
